question: What is Mio?
MIO includes the MioShape and MioSport, two unique and personalized fitness watches that measure your heart rate and keep a running total of the calories you burn. They are the only fitness products that perform all of these functions: gives an electrocardiogram (ECG)-accurate heart rate without a chest strap, calculates the percent of maximum heart rate while exercising, indicates how quickly your heart returns to its resting rate, and calculates the calories you burn during exercise. The MioSport provides the user with all of the above functions. The MioShape adds two more: the ability to track the number of calories consumed during the day against a daily target. The MioShape also comes with MioSense, a pocket-sized booklet which provides comprehensive information on health, nutrition, fitness and exercise. Along with a new section on stress management, it also provides a step-by-step guide on how to design and individualize a health and fitness program.
question: How does MIO measure heart rate?
Mio uses patented MioSensors that work by finger touch rather than the chest strap used by most other heart monitors. When you want to measure your heart rate, you place two fingers on the MioSensors and in seconds, MIO measures and displays your heart rate. The watch also can display the percentage of your maximum heart rate and the calories burned.
question: How do MioShape and MioSport calculate my calories burned during a workout?
MioShape and MioSport use complex formulas based on your own personal data, including your gender, age, weight, resting heart rate and heart rate when exercising. With every heart rate you take while working out, the Mio will display the number of calories burned to that point in your workout. At the end of your workout the Mio will display a total calorie burn. Because the Mio is portable and can be worn all the time, you will find that many everyday activities can turn into a calorie-burning workout.
question: How does MioShape track the calories burned and consumed?
You can enter the calories you consume into the watch and it will keep a running calorie total, let you know when you reach your daily calorie target, calculate how many calories you burn during exercise and deduct those calories from your calorie total. MioSense helps you determine what daily calorie intake is right for you.
question: Does MioSport track calories burned and consumed?
No. We have designed the MioSport to have fewer calorie functions for the user who is less interested in tracking calories consumed against a daily target. The MioSport, however, still accurately calculates the number of calories burned in a workout.
question: What is a daily calorie target?
Your daily calorie target is based on your daily calorie requirement, the number of calories your body needs to perform daily functions and maintain your current weight. If you want to lose or gain weight, MioShape and the MioSense program can help you set a daily calorie target.
question: What is the difference between a heart rate and a pulse rate?
Your heart rate is the number of times your heart contracts in a given period, measured in beats per minute. Your pulse rate is the number of times, blood forced by contracting your heart, surges through and dilates your vessels in a given period. Because the heart sends the blood through the vessels, heart and pulse rate are essentially (but not always absolutely) the same. Most exercisers measure their pulse rate. MIO measures your heart rate, which is more accurate.
question: Why is it more accurate to measure heart rate rather than pulse rate?
Sometimes, such as with an irregular heart beat or a premature beat, the heart does not send enough blood to be felt as a pulse so the heart and pulse rate differ.
question: What does ECG-accurate mean?
An ECG or electrocardiogram is the test performed in doctors' offices as a measure of the electrical activity of the heart. This activity regulates heart contraction, so an ECG measures your heart's exact rate and rhythm.
question: Is MIO as accurate as watches that use a chest strap?
Yes; in fact, it is more accurate. MIO is a self-contained unit with built-in sensors. These sensors are immune to the environmental noises that often interfere with the wireless transmission of chest straps. Chest straps often pick up frequency noises and can even pick up the transmission of another person's heart monitor.
question: Who is MIOShape designed for?
MioShape and the MioSense program is designed for anyone who is interested in general health and fitness, whether you want to lose weight, improve cardiovascular fitness, train for a race or improve your health after a heart attack. Because MioShape can be centered around monitoring calorie intake and burn, it could be more suited for those on a weight reduction program. The capability of measuring your heart rate on demand, anytime, anyplace, means that the Mio can also be used to monitor stress and general health.
question: How does MioSense help plan a fitness program?
MioSense, with a forward written by Dr. Deepak Chopra of The Chopra Center for Well Being, provides detailed information on how to incorporate the Mio to promote a healthier life. This includes advice on controlling stress through heart rate management, tips for those in cardiac rehabilitation programs, guidelines for eating well and exercising regularly. We have also designed the MioSense weight management program which is included in the guide. This program advocates a common sense approach to health and fitness changes in your life. Lists of commonly eaten foods (including fast foods) are included in the guide and show a breakdown by calorie, fat and carbohydrate content. The MioSense guide comes with the MioShape.
question: How do MIOShape and MIOSport help a person with a fitness program?
MIO provides the time, a chronograph, lap timer, alarm and chime. You can use it to time your intervals or laps, calculate your calories burned and measure your heart rate.
question: Who is MioSport designed for?
Like the MioShape, the MioSport is designed for anyone who is interested in their general health and fitness. With the same ECG-accurate heart rate monitoring and calorie burn functions as the MioShape, the MioSport can also be used to improve cardiovascular health and to control weight and stress. However, the MioSport has two functions less than the MioShape and may be more appealing to someone less interested in tracking calories consumed against a daily target. The MioSport is also a bit larger across the face than the MioShape and has a wider, and slightly longer, band.
question: Why is it important to know your heart rate?
Measuring your heart rate can help you in several ways:
question: What is a resting heart rate?
A resting heart rate is just that, your heart rate when you are at rest. It's best to measure your resting heart rate upon wakening naturally in the morning (an alarm clock can make your heart beat faster) and before rising (standing increases your heart rate). The average resting heart rate is 72 beats per minute.
Some people believe that a resting heart rate is a measure of fitness - the lower the rate, the more fit the individual. However, a more accurate measure of fitness is how quickly you heart rate slows down after exercising.
question: What is a maximum heart rate?
A maximum heart rate is the theoretical point at which, during extreme physical exertion, your heart rate begins to level off and you approach physical exhaustion. You don't need to exercise at a level to reach your maximum heart rate. In fact, coming too close to it can be dangerous for those at risk for heart attacks.
question: What is a target heart rate?
A target heart rate is the percentage of your maximum heart rate at which you exercise and burn calories most efficiently. Most people choose a target between 55 percent and 75 percent of their maximum heart rate, maintaining the highest rate at which they can sustain exercise for a desired period and optimize their workout.
If you have a family history of heart disease, your target heart rate should be between 45 percent and 55 percent to reduce the strain on your heart.
